David Montano is in his fourth season at La Marque High School. Montano started his coaching career at Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 1995 as a defensive assistant. From 1996-2002 he coached several positions for the TAMUK Javelinas. Montano started his high school coaching career at H.M. King High School in Kingsville where he was the special teams coordinator, defensive backs, and assistant offensive line coach. He also served as the head boys and girls track coach and produced three state medals in track, the first three in school history. In 2006 Montano relocated to Premont High School for two seasons where he wore several hats. He was the high school assistant principal, football special teams and co-defensive coordinator, and head track coach for the boys and girls programs. During his second season at Premont, he also took on the role of interim athletic director and head football coach. In 2008, Montano landed at Corpus Christi West Oso High School for three seasons where he was the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach. He also served as the head boys track coach and produced four state track and field medals in the sprints, the first track medals in twenty three seasons. Montano also had the opportunity to coach Track and Field at the collegiate level. He was the jumps and assistant sprint coach at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (2005-2006) and served in the same capacity at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi during the 2008-2009 seasons. A native of Donna Texas, Montano received both his bachelor degree in health and kinesiology and his master’s degree in kinesiology from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He holds certifications in education administration, health, kinesiology, and mathematics.
Defensive Ends/Special Teams Coordinator
Coach Mathews is beginning his 15th year teaching and coaching at La Marque ISD. He is a 1994 graduate of La Marque High School and a member of the 1993 State Finalist Team, of which he received All-County & District Honors. Coach Mathews earned a B.A. in History from Prairie View A&M University in 1998. In the classroom he teaches United States History & World History. On the field he is the Special Teams Coordinator & coaches the Inside Linebackers. In the winter he is the wrestling coach. Coach Mathews and his wife of eleven years, live in West Texas City and have three children, Marcus II "Tyke" is a junior at La Marque High School, Darian is a 5th Grader and Jamia is a four year old.
Coach Flores is entering his 4th season with La Marque. His coaching stops include Houston Chavez, Corpus Christi Calallen and La Feria. Coach Flores has held positions as a Defensive Coordinator, Special Teams Coordinator, Offensive and Defensive Assistant. Coach Flores was selected as a Board Member of the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association in 2012. He has coached in the Space City Classic All Star Game (2010), the Bayou Bowl (2012) and the GHFCA Bowl (2014). He is a graduate of Texas A&M-Kingsville. Coach Flores is a native of San Benito, Tx.
Coach Lynch was born and raised in Galveston, Texas and graduated from Ball High School where he was named all-district running back. He attended Baylor University on a football scholarship where he played running back/linebacker. He graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Physical Education/Health. Later Coach Lynch attended Texas Southern University where he earned a Master's Degree in Health Education. He began his coaching career in Port Lavaca, Texas where he coached Varsity Football, basketball and track. He later moved to La Marque, Texas and was hired by the great Coach Massey. Earnest has coached on every level in La Marque including being the middle school athletic coordinator plus he has been a part of all 5 football State Championship coaching staffs. He has coached several track athletes at the state track meet where they have earned medals. Coach Lynch is beginning his 29th year as an educator and coach in La Marque. He is a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association. Coach Lynch is married to his wife Cheryl and they have 3 children; Jocelyn, Rezhina and Cody.
Coach Janes is beginning his 4th season at La Marque High School. He is the Offensive Line Coach and Head Strength Coach for the Cougars. He also serves as the Head Powerlifting Coach. Coach Janes is in his 13th year of coaching with stops at Chavez, Milby and Stockdale in addition to La Marque. His offensive lines have helped his offenses be the top squads in the district 8 of the last 9 years. Coach Janes is married to his beautiful wife Tina Janes.
Assistant Head Coach/Running Backs
Entering his 8th season of coaching and fifth year at La Marque, Coach Calvin began his coaching career in 2007 at Timpson High School in Timpson, Texas. Coach Calvin coached the running backs and safeties and was the head track coach. In 2008 Coach Calvin was promoted to defensive coordinator and took over as the head football coach the last two weeks of the season where he lead the team to victories. In 2009 Coach Calvin was promoted to offensive coordinator. Coach Calvin also was the head track coach for three years, leading the Bears to a district championship, two district runner up finishes, an area championship, an area runner up finish two top five regional and state final finishes. In 2010, Calvin joined the Coogs as running backs coach helping the Coogs to a state championship appearance and a quarter finals appearance in 2011. Calvin coached two time all state running back Tim Wright. Calvin also coached girls basketball, softball, and boys track in La Marque. Coach Calvin has one daughter Maya, who is seven years old.
Coach Berneathy is entering his 8th year coaching and his 1st at La Marque. He started his career at Texarkana Arkansas High, where they won the Arkansas 6A State Championship. From 2007-2012 he worked at La Porte HS as the offensive line coach, which included being a part of two quarterfinalist teams in 2008 and 2011. He spent the 2012 season as the defensive line coach with Dickinson. Coach Berneathy is a 2002 graduate of Galveston Ball and played football at Southern Arkansas University from 2002-2006, earning a Bachelors Degree in Education. In 2011 he received his Masters Degree from Lamar University in Educational Administration.
Coach Brandon Rodriguez is entering his 2nd year with the Coogs, and his 8th year as a teacher/coach in the State of Texas. A 1997 graduate of Corpus Christi Flour Bluff, Brandon was a 4A State Bronze Medalist in the shot put. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Education from Arkansas State University where he was a part of 3 Sun Belt Conference Championship Track teams. His previous coaching experiences range from Tarkington, Cleveland and George Ranch High Schools. Coach Rodriguez specializes in the sports of football, track and powerlifting. His wife Elizabeth, son Gabriel and dog Sosa are extremely proud to be a part of the Cougar Family.
Byron D. Monroe
Offensive Quality Control/Middle School
Coach Monroe is a graduate of Langston University and has a Master's Degree from Oklahoma City University. Coach Monroe is a veteran of the United States Navy. He began his coaching career at the United States Naval Academy. He also has coaching experience in the Oklahoma public school system and in the Houston public school system. Coach Monroe has been coaching for more than 20 years and is in his 2nd year at La Marque. He is married to Charmetria and has four children: Lamont, Alexandria, Chadwick and Corliss.
Coach Joyce is entering his 6th year of coaching and teaching. He has previously coached at both the middle school level and at Westbury HS. He has won middle school zone championships in football and basketball while increasing participation. He is certified in Physical Education, Special Education and Social Studies. This will be his second year as part of the Cougar program. He led the Cougar baseball team to a playoff appearance in the 2014 season.
Coach Kevin Wilcox is entering his second year of teaching and coaching. He graduated from the University of Houston-Downtown with a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and minor in Psychology. He graduated from La Marque in 1995 and played on the 1993 and 1994 finalist teams. Coach Wilcox lettered in four sports at La Marque: football, basketball, baseball and track. He is teaching social studies at the Renaissance Academy.
Coach Holmes is beginning his 14th year in education at La Marque. He is a 1992 graduate of La Marque HS and a member of the 1992 Bi-District team. Coach Holmes earned a B.A. in Elementary Education from Wiley College and his Masters from Grand Canyon University. He currently teaches 4th grade Social Studies & Writing at La Marque Elementary Math & Science Academy. Coach Holmes has four lovely kids- Kancia, Asia, Ashton & Amari Holmes.
Coach Hartnett is in his 2nd year coaching at La marque ISD. His work with the baseball team last year helped them advance to the state playoffs in 2014. He is married to his wife Jeri and he has two children Kendall (3) and Coltyn (2).
Coach Rios is in his first year teaching at La Marque ISD. He is a 2011 graduate of the University of Houston at Clear lake and has been involved with public education since 2009. His goal is to challenge students to develop the characteristics and habits to equate to them being successful in the professional world.
Coach Kitchen is entering his 2nd year coaching and his 1st year at La Marque. He began his career at Chula Vista High School in San Diego, California. Coach Kitchen is a 2003 graduate of Galveston Ball and played football at Northwestern University from 2003-2007, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration with a minor in Finance.
Coach Lartigue is in his 8th year coaching at La Marque. This will be his 6th year as Video Coordinator. Coach Lartigue has also been an assistant basketball coach for six years. Coach Lartigue graduated from La Marque High School and was a member of the undefeated 1995 State Championship Football Team. After high school he earned his B.S. from Texas A&M University and a MBA/MHA from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. He is certified to teach Special Education. He and his wife HaTriece have two sons Tristan(8) and Bryce(5).
Head Athletic Trainer
Bobby Kinsley is beginning his 29th year of athletic training and 2nd year at La Marque High School. he has a masters degree from Texas A&M-Kingsville in Sports Administration that he earned in 1992. He worked four years at Odessa High School from 1987 to 1991 and three years at West Texas A&M as the Head Athletic Trainer/Assistant Athletic Director from 1991-1994. The last 20 years he has worked in the hospital setting directing several sports medicine outreach programs. He is originally from San Angelo, Texas.
