Dr. Mike Jackson
Athletic Coordinator/Head Football Coach

Coach Jackson has 25 years experience as an Athletic Administrator/Head Football Coach including 7 seasons at La Marque.  During this time he has compiled a record of 183-98-4.  This includes 2 State Championships and 21 playoff appearances. He is 64-23 in his seven seasons as the Head Cougar, including a district record of 28-4.  He has led 5 different schools to the playoffs and 4 different schools to the 4th round.  Coach Jackson has been named District Coach of the Year 8 times and has served as the Head Coach of the Bayou Bowl (2012), Space City (2010) and the GHFCA Bowl (2014) All-Star games. Coach Jackson has been named Galveston County Coach of the Year three times, in 2011, 2012 & 2015, as well as being named Houston Texans "Coach of the Week" in 2011, 2015 & 2017.  He is a Past-President for the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association (2011-2012) and has had 13 assistants move on to take Head Football Positions during his career. He has his B.A. from St. Edward's University in Physical Education/History (1990), an M.A. from Southwest Texas State in Athletic Administration (1991), an M.Ed. in Educational Administration from the University of Houston-Victoria (1994), and his Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from California Coast University (2001). In the spring of 2017 he was inducted into the Ronnie Bell Hall of Honor and has spoken at numerous clinics regarding offensive football and program development, including the Glazier, Greyhound, City of Palms, Gridiron Heroes & Gateway to Mexico Clinics. He is married to Tracey Jackson and has three children Mariah (11), Jericho (6) and their newborn son Maverick.

Justin Calvin
Defensive Coordinator

Entering his 11th season as a coach (8th at La Marque) Justin Calvin will be coordinating the Defense for the Cougars. Calvin has been a part of 8 consecutive Playoff appearances, 6 consecutive District Championships, 2 Quarterfinals, 1 Semifinal and 1 State Championship appearances in his tenure at La Marque as an assistant. He is a graduate of Sam Houston State University. Coach Calvin also has two daughters Maya and McKenzie. 

John Launius
Offensive Coordinator

John B. Launius, La Marque’s Offensive Coordinator, is entering his 24th season in the coaching business.  One season as a college graduate assistant, 23yrs as an Offensive Coordinator and 11yrs as a Head Coach.  Four of those Coordinator years were at the Junior College level.  This will be Launius’ 4th season with the La Marque Cougars (2011, 2012, 1016, 2017). 

Launius was the quarterback on his undefeated State Championship in 1987 led by Legendary Coach John Outlaw.  Launius went on to start 4 seasons as Quarterback at Southern Arkansas University where he set 11 school offensive records.  Coach Launius has admitted his most proud accomplishment is seeing former players move on to play in college, play pro ball or be successful young men in society.

Launius is married to Dr. Keri Launius, an administrator in Galveston ISD.  He has a Daughter, Morgan that is a soph. at SFA and 2 sons, Myles, a 3 sport letterman and Senior at La Marque HS and Ayden, aka...”Mush”  a 5th grader in GISD. 

Dan Morgan

Coach Morgan has 25 years experience in coaching and has a state championship from St. Pius High in 1993.  He is a former Head Coach and Coordinator as well as having served as a Head Baseball and Softball coach at various stops.  He has coached at St. Pius X, Lutheran North, Milby, Chavez and Mount Carmel High School.  His wife, Nicole, is the Theater Arts Director at Memorial High School in Spring Branch ISD.  They have two children, Colleen (22) and Nathan (19).

Eric Joyce
Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Line

Coach Joyce has been at La Marque for 4 years where he has progressed from the jr high to Assistant Head Coach. He is in his second year coaching the D-Line and was previously the Recievers and outside backers coach. Coach Joyce has had stops at Baytown Lee, Houston Westbury, and Johnston Middle School. Coach Joyce also has a English Bulldog named Packer. 

Jimmie Tyson

Coach Tyson is a retired United States Marine with 21 years of service. After retiring in 2014, he spent two years as a Marine Instructor for the MCJROTC program in Houston ISD. Coach Tyson joined the TCISD family in 2016 as a 7th/8th grade Social Studies teacher at Woodrow Wilson DAEP. He is currently an 8th grade American History teacher at La Marque Middle School and in his second year of coaching in La Marque. His wife, Felicia, is an English Language Arts teacher at Dunbar Middle School in Dickerson ISD. They have two children, Isaiah (19) and Jamia (18).    

Zak Tarvin
Middle School

Coach Tarvin is entering his first year of teaching and coaching. He coms to La Marque after graduating Summa Cum Laude from Stephen F. Austin (2017) with a BS in Kinesiology.  While at SFA Coach Tarvin was involved with the Athletic Department, serving as a manager for the Lumberjacks Men's Basketball team, where he was a part of 3 Southland Conference championships.

Jonathan Hersh
Running Backs

Coach Jonathan Hersh is in his fifth year of coaching and starting his second year coaching with La Marque.  Coach Hersh was a three-year letterman kicker for the Austin College Kangaroos (Sherman, TX) where he earned a BA degree in Psychology and a Master’s of Arts in Teaching.  Following graduation, he was a graduate assistant coach for the Kangaroo football team.  Coach Hersh played running back, kicker and punter in high school for the Pearland Oilers and Alan B. Shephard (IL) Astros.  For several years, Coach Hersh ran the Hersh Brothers Kicking Camp with his brother, Coach Robert Hersh and has several graduates who have gone on to have successful college kicking careers.  

Kevin Wilcox
Freshman Head Coach/Corners

Coach Kevin Wilcox is entering his 6th year of teaching and coaching.  He graduated from the University of Houston-Downtown with a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and minor in Psychology.  He graduated from La Marque in 1995 and played on the 1993 and 1994 finalist teams.  Coach Wilcox lettered in four sports at La Marque: football, basketball, baseball and track.  

Brent Lartigue
Video Coordinator/Middle School Coaching

Coach Lartigue is in his 12th year coaching at La Marque. This will be his 9th year as Video Coordinator. Coach Lartigue has also been an assistant basketball coach for seven years. Coach Lartigue graduated from La Marque High School and was a member of the undefeated 1995 State Championship Football Team. After high school he earned his B.S. from Texas A&M University and a MBA/MHA from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. He is certified to teach Special Education. He and his wife HaTriece have three sons Tristan(11), Bryce(8) and Jackson (newborn).
